Avui en dia s'espera que els i les docents de llengües estrangeres ensenyin la competència comunicativa intercultural (CCI). Tanmateix, la manera com podrien integrar-la en el programa d'ensenyament d'idiomes segueix sent un repte. L'objectiu d'aquest estudi, doncs, és explorar les raons que hi ha al darrera de l'estat actual de la CCI dins l'aula d'anglès de 5è i 6è curs de primària de Catalunya: entendre els obstacles que tal vegada prevenen als i a les mestres d'ensenyar-la i identificar les variables que poden afavorir-ne el desenvolupament. Amb aquesta finalitat, es van entrevistar mestres d'Anglès com a Llengua Estrangera (ALE) i també es van administrar qüestionaris. Paral·lelament, es van entrevistar experts en l'àmbit per tal de contribuir a explicar l'impacte dels factors estudiats i suggerir recomanacions. Els resultats apunten que l'adquisició de la CCI encara no és una prioritat en l'ensenyament d'anglès a Catalunya: es subestima el valor funcional de l'anglès com a llengua franca i, consegüentment, s'associa l'ensenyament de la cultura amb l'aprenentatge de la civilització del món anglosaxó. No obstant això, vivint experiències interculturals a l'estranger i en el lloc de residència, així com amb formació en l'àmbit, els i les docents d'ALE poden contribuir positivament que l'alumnat comprengui les diferents cultures, inclosa la seva, i que utilitzi aquest coneixement per comunicar-se amb contactes interculturals lliure de judicis, amb flexibilitat i eficàcia.^^^^

Foreign language teachers are now expected to teach Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). However, how they can effectively integrate ICC into the language teaching agenda still remains the greatest challenge. The goal of this study is thus to explore the reasons behind the status quo of ICC in 5th and 6th grade English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms in Catalonia: to get an insight into the barriers that may prevent the teachers to attain ICC instruction, and to identify the variables than can favor its development. To this end, interviews with EFL teachers were conducted and questionnaires were administered. In parallel, key experts in the field were interviewed to help explain the impact of the studied variables and to provide some recommendations. Results show that the acquisition of ICC isn't yet a priority in our foreign language teaching: the functional value of English as a lingua franca is underestimated and therefore culture teaching is largely associated with learning about the civilization of the English-speaking world. However, by having intercultural life experiences abroad and in the place of residence, along with training in ICC, EFL teachers can positively contribute to assisting their students to understand cultures, including their own, and to use this understanding to communicate with intercultural encounters non-judgmentally, adaptably and effectively.^^^^
