Background: Preterm infants have a high biological risk for developmental delayed psychomotor. The purpose of this pilot RCT study was to evaluate the short-term efficacy of early and multimodal physiotherapy intervention to improve motor development, and the parental stress degree.
Methods: 20 preterm infants were recruited with a gestational age between 28 -34 weeks in Barcelona. These babies were randomized into 2 groups: the intervention group or the control group. The early multimodal physiotherapy intervention was divided in two parts: a) intervention in the NICU b) intervention in the home. The results were evaluated with the general movement assessment (GMA); The Ages and Stages Questionnaires Third Edition (ASQ-3), and Parent Stress Index- Short Form (PSI-SF).
Results: There were no differences at the beginning of the study. At the 1st moth of corrected age, the ASQ-3 showed statistically significant difference between groups (p<0.05) in all areas except the gross motor area. No significant differences were found in the GMA and PSI-SF evaluations either.
Conclusions: The study showed promising short-term results with early multimodal intervention to improve infant development at 1 month of corrected age. However, more research is needed. |
