The process of writing with ESL/EFL students

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze whether an international school (International Department of Landakotsskoli, in Iceland) follows a process method in writing, if so, how the method can improve the writing skills of a group of 7 to 9 year-old ESL students, while enhancing their autonomy and confidence in their writing competence. The data of this study was collected through an observation template. Most students were ESL learners and their writings were examined during my school placement. The result shows that, by following writing as a process, pupils improve their writing skills since they know what to do as a result of clear guidelines.

L'objectiu d'aquest treball és analitzar si una escola internacional (International Department of Landakotsskoli, situada a Islàndia) segueix el mètode d'escriptura com un procés i, en ser així, com seguir aquesta metodologia pot millorar l'habilitat d'escriptura en anglès d'un grup d'estudiants de 7 a 9 anys, millorant els seus resultats i augmentat la seva autonomia i confiança. Les dades s'han recollit a partir d’una graella d'observació. La majoria d'estudiants tenen l'anglès com a segona llengua i els seus textos han sigut analitzats durant la meva estada de pràctiques. Els resultats mostren que treballant l'escriptura com un procés, els estudiants milloren les seves competències en escriptura, ja que saben que s'espera d'ells com a resultat d'una bona estructuració de les tasques.
