The protagonists in children's books allow children to experience adventures that they
can associate to their own feelings and that allow them to believe in the victory as a
reward for their efforts. Moreover, children can recognize and understand their own
emotions through the different characters and realize that living means facing difficult
challenges but also having good experiences.
We recognize the importance of characters in children’s literature but, above all, the
significance of the protagonist. Consequently, the main character and his role in
children's narrative is the subject of study of this thesis. In accordance with it, we offer
a tour through the history of the children’s narrative examining traditional tales and
picture storybooks’ characters and their evolution. The objective is to understand how
a five-year-old would relate to these protagonists and link it to literary theories.
Furthermore, we explore a five-year-old classroom library to identify the different types
of protagonists in their books.^^^^
