Teaching English to very young learners through Montessori and Decroly methods

Abstract

In the last few years, the introduction of English as a second language into Infant Education in Catalan schools has experienced an important growth. A principal reason is because of the belief that young children are natural language acquirers. Nevertheless, without their environment’s stimulus this development would not be possible. This study has as its main objective to discover if the teaching of English as a foreign language can be applied to Montessori and Decroly methods. The research has been carried out through observations in two Montessori schools and in one Decroly school. Also, three interviews have been done to one member of each school. Another tool of this research is data collection from the school’s website. The results of this study are presented in this paper.

En els darrers anys, la introducció de l’anglès com a aprenentatge de la segona llengua a l’educació infantil a les escoles catalanes ha experimentat un creixement important. Una raó principal és degut a la creença que els infants són adquirents d’idiomes naturals. Tot i això, sense l’estímul del seu entorn aquest desenvolupament no seria possible. Aquest estudi té com a objectiu descobrir si l’ensenyament de l’anglès com a llengua estrangera pot ser aplicat als mètodes Montessori i Decroly. La recerca s'ha fet a través d’observacions en dues escoles Montessori i una escola Decroly. A més, també s’han dut a terme tres entrevistes a un membre de cada escola. Un altre instrument de recerca ha set l’anàlisi de documents, extret de les pàgines web dels centres. Els resultats extrets de l'estudi es presenten en aquest treball.
