La traducción de los referentes culturales en la serie How I Met Your Mother

Abstract

La finalidad de este estudio es analizar la traducción de referentes culturales en la serie How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014) con el objetivo de hacer una contribución en el ámbito de los estudios de la Traducción Audiovisual y, concretamente, en los estudios de la traducción de referentes culturales. La traducción de un recurso audiovisual se produce a varios niveles, entre los que destacan el lingüístico y el cultural. Actualmente, se traducen y subtitulan miles de recursos audiovisuales de procedencia estadounidense, ya que Estados Unidos es uno de los mayores productores de series y películas. Como consecuencia, los traductores adoptan el papel de mediadores culturales y, como tales, tendrán que eliminar las barreras lingüísticas y culturales que separan al texto origen (TO) del texto meta (TM). El objetivo de este estudio de investigación es averiguar cuáles son los referentes culturales que podrían causar dificultades de comprensión al espectador y qué soluciones proponen los traductores audiovisuales para solventar este problema. También averiguaremos si los traductores se decantan por extranjerizar o domesticar los referentes culturales. El presente trabajo lo he realizado basándome en la subtitulación de la primera temporada de la serie How I Met Your Mother. Para llevar a cabo este análisis he utilizado el guion original de la serie y la subtitulación de la plataforma Netflix.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the translation of cultural references in the series How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014) with the aim of contributing to the field of Audiovisual Translation studies and, specifically, to the translation studies of cultural references. The translation of audiovisual resources occurs at several levels, among which the linguistic and cultural stand out. Currently, thousands of audiovisual resources of American provenance are translated and subtitled, given that the United States is one of the largest producers of series and films. Consequently, translators adopt the role of cultural mediators and, as such, they will have to eliminate the linguistic and cultural barriers that separate the source text (ST) from the target text (TT). The aim of this research study is to figure out which cultural references may cause comprehension difficulties to the spectator, and what kind of solutions audiovisual translators propose to solve this problem. We will also find out if translators prefer the foreignization or the domestication of cultural references. This study concentrates on the subtitling of the first season of the series How I Met Your Mother. To carry out this analysis
