qüestionaris HADS i GDS.

Dementia has become one of the greatest causes of dependence and disability in older people. This is
associated with affective symptomatology such as anxiety and depression. It is important to be able to
guarantee these people and families a quality of life (QoL). Virtual Reality (RV) is beginning to be used
as a therapeutic tool with people with dementia and/or cognitive impairment. One of the interventions
carried out with older people is Reminiscence Therapy (RT) which is used to stimulate the
autobiographical memory of the person and help to structure and integrate both negative and positive
events in their life history. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of VR in elderly people with
mild or moderate cognitive impairment and affective symptomatology through RT to improve their
QoL. The interventions consisted of three individual sessions held by nine residents of a Geriatric center
in Barcelona with custom immersive contents. It assessed pre-post affective symptomatics with the
HADS and GDS questionnaires. During the interventions it collected qualitative information about his
conduct, emotions, negative sensations of the VR through observation and a semi-structured interview,
and the feeling of presence with the SUSQ questionnaire. No significant differences in mood changes
were found between pre- and post-intervention. Residents showed a high level of presence, and
clinically relevant emotions and sensations were induced to be able to do reminiscence work. The
understanding of the questionnaires made it difficult to answer which may not be suitable for this
population. The VR provoked few adverse reactions. The study shows the feasibility of performing
custom RT interventions using VR in this population. For future studies it would be interesting to
expand the sample and to place greater emphasis on evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of
intervention using qualitative instruments.^^^^
