Nowadays, cancer is an increasingly visible and normalized issue in our society. In recent
years, cancer treatment has shifted from a medical model, focused solely on reducing
discomfort and physical symptoms, to a biopsychosocial model. This model gives
importance to all the dimensions (physical, psychological, social and spiritual) that
surround and influence the patient's quality of life and affect the course and prognosis of
his or her oncological disease. For this reason, the main objective of the present work is
to evaluate the symptomatology, emotional state and psychosocial, socio-familiar and
spiritual needs of oncology patients included in a Phase 1 clinical study. To do this, a
quantitative methodology has been followed and the following questionnaires has been
administered to 20 oncology patients included in a Phase 1 clinical trial: the adhoc
questionnaire to extract sociodemographic and medical data, the Edmonton Symptom
Assessment Scale (ESAS) to assess the patients' symptomatology, and the End-of-Life
Distress Psychosocial and Spiritual Needs Assessment Scale (ENP-E) to measure the
degree of emotional distress of the patients, as well as their psychosocial and spiritual
needs. The evaluation was carried out in four times: at the beginning of the clinical trial
(T0), after one month (T1), after two months (T2) and after three months (T3). The results
obtained have shown that oncology patients present similar sociodemographic and
medical characteristics between the control group and the intervention group. In addition,
they have shown that there are no significant differences in the intergroup evaluation at
any of the four evaluation moments. As far as the intragroup results are concerned, no
significant changes have observed in the experimental group, but significant changes
were observed in the control group during the evaluation times. Therefore, it can be
affirmed that psychosocial care in oncology patients shows effectiveness, but that the
changes would be more significant if the evaluation time were increased.^^^^
