Analysis of fish otolith in the stomach contents of the atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) in the Canary Islands

Abstract

En este trabajo final de grado se exponen los resultados del estudio realizado con la ONG científica SECAC (Sociedad para el Estudio de los Cetáceos del Archipiélago Canario) que trabaja en el proyecto BIOCETCAN. El estudio se basa en el análisis de los otolitos de peces encontrados en el contenido estomacal de delfines moteados del Atlántico (Stenella frontalis) varados en Canarias entre 1994 y 2015. El objetivo principal de este trabajo fue identificar y cuantificar las presas (peces) depredados por delfines en base a las características morfológicas de los otolitos con el fin de conocer la preferencia trófica de la especie en el archipiélago canario, así como evaluar la abundancia y diversidad de especies presa durante un periodo de 21 años. Se analizaron 25 contenidos estomacales, de los cuales 17 presentaban otolitos. Los otolitos se clasificaron según sus características morfológicas con la ayuda de una lupa binocular. Para la identificación se utilizaron diversas fuentes (guías de identificación, artículos, recursos web, etc.). Se analizaron e identificaron un total de 2233 otolitos y 221 permanecieron sin identificar. Las causas de esto último son varias: complejidad taxonómica de ciertos taxones de peces (especialmente de aguas profundas) y otolitos desgastados y/o rotos por efecto de la digestión. A partir de estos otolitos se calculó la ocurrencia, frecuencia de número, índice de diversidad y una prueba no paramétrica de Kruskal-Wallis que resultaron. Como parte de este proyecto fue la creación de una base de datos de los otolitos de peces de Canarias.

At this final grade project are exposed the results of the study carried out with the scientific NGO SECAC (Society for the Study of the Cetaceans in the Canary Archipelago) working in the BIOCETCAN project. The study was based on the analysis of the fish otoliths found in the stomach contents of the Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) stranded in the Canary Islands between 1994 and 2015. The main objective of this work was to identify and quantify the prey items (fishes) predated by dolphins based on the morphological characteristics of the otoliths in order to know the trophic preference of the species in the Canary archipelago as well as to evaluate the abundance and diversity of prey species over a period of 21 years. Twenty-five stomach contents were analyzed, of which 17 had otoliths. The otoliths were classified according to their morphological characteristics with the help of a binocular loupe. Various sources were used for identification (identification guides, papers, web resources, etc.). A total of 2233 otoliths were analyzed and identified and 221 remained unidentified. The causes of the latter are several: taxonomic complexity of certain fish taxa (especially deep-sea) and worn and/or broken otoliths due to the effect of digestion. From these otoliths were calculated occurrence, number frequency, diversity index and a non-parametrical Kruskal-Wallis test which were. As part of this project was the creation of a database of the fish otoliths of Canary Islands.
