La llengua de l'enemic com a llengua pròpia: cultures translatives del paisatge indígena nord-americà

Abstract

Les cultures translatives indígenes de l’Amèrica del Nord utilitzen idees i processos molt propers als emprats en els estudis de traducció per tal de portar a terme la seva desconstrucció afirmativa com a subjecte colonitzat, redefinir-se, rescriure la seva història, i difondre la seva cultura ancestral, i, d’aquesta manera, aconseguir capgirar el procés de colonització. A més, aquesta reafirmació, la porten a terme mitjançant la llengua anglesa, a la qual atorguen el valor de les llengües pròpies que van perdre en aquest procés. Aquest treball de recerca pretén ser una aproximació a la situació actual de la narrativa indígena expressada en llengua anglesa. Està dividit en quatre capítols. El primer capítol tracta de la formació d’un estil de narrativa que podríem anomenar indígena, i la seva evolució des de l’any 1900 fins al moment en què aquest estil va estar consolidat: quan va aparèixer la novel•la de N. Scott Momaday titulada House Made of Dawn, l’any 1968. Per tal d’exposar aquesta evolució se segueix la cronologia que proposa Paula Gunn Allen en la seva antologia Voice of the Turtle. American Indian Literature 1900-1970. Al segon capítol hi trobem diverses veus actuals del panorama literari indígena nord-americà. L’eix del capítol és l’obra de Simon J. Ortiz, Speaking for the Generations. Native Writers on Writing. Entre altres veus, s’hi destaquen les de Leslie Marmon Silko i Gloria Bird, però Ortiz també dóna la paraula a veus noves entre les que hi figuren Esther G. Belin i Daniel David Moses, finalment hi apareix la contribució de Victor D. Montejo, un escriptor maia guatemalenc exiliat als Estats Units. Les aportacions d’aquests escriptors i escriptores giren a l’entorn de dues idees fonamentals: la interdependència entre la raça humana i el paisatge que l’envolta, i la lluita per la supervivència que passa inevitablement per desfer el procés de colonització que han sofert els pobles indígenes nord-americans. La base del tercer capítol és una obra editada conjuntament per Joy Harjo i Gloria Bird que es titula Reinventing the Enemy’s Language. Contemporary Native Women’s Writings of North America. En aquesta antologia, composta per relats i poemes d’escriptores indígenes actuals, hi podem distingir de nou la idea de la supervivència, i també, la lluita per tal de descolonitzar els pobles indígenes nord-americans, sempre integrats en un entorn amb el qual l’ésser humà s’interrelaciona completament. Aquesta lluita es porta a terme modificant —reinventant— la llengua de l’enemic per tal que serveixi els interessos del poble colonitzat. Finalment, el quart capítol explica les similituds entre el procés de descolonització que es porta a terme a l’Índia i el que es porta a terme a l’Amèrica del Nord, i com es estudis de traducció poden aportar una base teòrica per observar i explicar aquest procés de descolonització, tot capgirant la funció de la llengua de l’enemic, que si en un principi va actuar d’element colonitzador, avui dia és un element descolonitzador.

This research paper seeks to bring into view the present-day situation of Native-American narrative in English. It is divided into four chapters. The first deals with the emergence of what we might call a Native-American narrative style and its evolution from 1900 up until its particularly forceful expression in 1968 with the appearance of N. Scott Momaday’s novel House Made of Dawn. To trace this evolution, we follow the chronology set forth by Paula Gunn Allen in her anthology Voice of the Turtle: American Indian Literature 1900-1970. In the second chapter we hear various voices from contemporary Native-American literary production as we follow Simon J. Ortiz’s anthology Speaking for the Generations: Native Writers on Writing. Noteworthy among these are Leslie Marmon Silko and Gloria Bird, alongside new voices such as those of Esther G. Belin and Daniel David Moses, and closing with Guatemalan-Mayan Victor D. Montejo, exiled in the United States. These writers’ contributions gravitate around two fundamental notions: the interdependence between human beings and the surrounding landscape, and the struggle for survival, which of necessity involves the deconstruction of the (post-)colonial subject. The third chapter deals with an anthology of short stories and poems by present-day Native-American women writers, edited by Joy Harjo and Gloria Bird and entitled Reinventing the Enemy’s Language: Contemporary Native Women’s Writings of North America. It too exemplifies personal and cultural reaffirmation on a landscape rich in ancestral elements, but also where one’s own voice takes shape in the language which, historically, is that of the enemy. In the final chapter we see how translation studies provide a critical perspective and fruitful reflection on the literary production of Native-American translative cultures, where a wide range of writers struggle to bring about the affirmative deconstruction of the colonialised subject. Thus there comes a turnaround in the function of the “enemy’s language,” giving rise also to the question of cultural incommensurability.
