Introduction: The first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in 50,000 infected healthcare
workers (HCW) in Spain. This strongly affected the workers’ occupational health and safety
leading to unprecedented levels of psychological distress. Previous research points out that
some factors, such as, gender, age, level of exposure to the virus and profession, can be related
to differential risks of mental health problems in such a situation.
Hypothesis: HCW that were female, young, in the front line and new in the job are most
vulnerable to mental health issues.
Objective: To conduct a cross-sectional in-hospital assessment to analyse the correlation
between a) sociodemographic, labour and risk of contagion variables, with b) symptoms of
anxiety, depression and sleep disturbances among the HCW of the General Hospital of
Granollers (province of Barcelona, Spain).
Methodology: This study explored the participants’ sociodemographic and labour data as well
as perceived risk of contagion through an online survey. The psychological factors were
analysed through the administration of the Goldberg Anxiety and Depression Scale -GADS-
(Spanish version) and one-item scale used to identify sleep changes. The sample was not
randomized, and 98 professionals participated. Descriptive analyses and linear regression
analyses were carried out as to correlate the variables.
Results: Symptoms of anxiety were detected most frequently, as 81% of the sample showed
signs of anxiety. 53% of the participants experienced depression, and 51% referred both anxiety
and depression. 72% of the participants reported sleep disturbances. This leaves merely 13% of
the study sample with no sign of the measured mental health issues.
Conclusions: Covid-19 outbreak has had a substantial impact on the HCW’s levels of anxiety,
depression and sleep quality. The significant stressors detected are: (i) working in the front line
and (ii) perceiving lack of adequate PP. The identified risk factors are: (a) being a woman, (b)
having secondary education or equivalent, (c) being a healthcare graduate, (d) living alone and
(e) working part-time.^^^^

Introducción: La primera ola de la pandemia Covid-19 resultó en 50,000 trabajadoras sanitarias
contagiadas en España. Esto impactó fuertemente en la seguridad y salud laboral de las
trabajadoras, llegando a niveles de malestar psicológico sin precedentes. Investigaciones
previas destacan algunos factores asociados a problemas de salud mental en situaciones
parecidas, como: genero, edad, grupo profesional y nivel de exposición.
Hipótesis: Trabajadoras mujeres, jóvenes, con poca antigüedad y en primera línea presentarán
más vulnerabilidad a malestar psicológico.
Objetivo: Realizar un estudio transversal e interhospitalario para analizar la correlación entre
a) variables sociodemográficas, laborales y de riesgo de contagio con b) sintomatología de
ansiedad, depresión y pérdida de calidad de sueño en las trabajadoras del Hospital General de
Granollers (Barcelona, España).
Metodología: Este estudio exploró las variables sociodemográficas, laborales y de riesgo de
contagio mediante un cuestionario en línea donde también fueron recolectados los factores
psicológicos mediante la versión en castellano de la Escala de Ansiedad y Depresión de
Goldberg (EADG) y una pregunta única utilizada para identificar cambios en el sueño. No fue
un muestreo aleatorio. 98 profesionales participaron. Se llevó a cabo análisis descriptivos y
regresiones lineares para correlacionar las variables.
Resultados: Los síntomas de ansiedad fueron las más frecuentes, identificados en 81% de la
muestra. 53% de las participantes habían vivenciado depresión, y 51% refirió signos de
depresión y ansiedad. 72% informó haber perdido calidad de sueño a raíz de la primera ola.
Solamente un 13% de la muestra no mostró señales medidas de malestar psicológico.
Conclusiones: El brote de Covid-19 ha tenido un importante impacto en el nivel de ansiedad,
depresión y calidad de sueño en la población sanitaria. Los estresores detectados son: (i) trabajar
en primera línea, y (ii) percibir falta de Equipo de Protección Individual (EPI). Los factores de
riesgo identificados son: (a) ser mujer, (b) tener educación secundaria o equivalente, (c) ser
licenciada en ciencias de salud, (d) vivir sola y (e) trabajar a tiempo parcial.^^^^
